FWIW, that article doesn't feel real. The phrasing and the words sound like a modern attempt to recreate a historical article. Snopes doesn't have anything, but I'm really suspicious.

Okay, I can now see that there is an article in the NYT archives with that headline. I'm not willing to pay to see the actual content. Any subscribers here who can look it up?
