Are you using a null modem cable?

A null modem cable is an RS-232 serial cable where the transmit and receive lines are crosslinked.

I'm pretty sure is what you will need to get this to work. A regular RS-232 serial cable will not work as it doesn't cross over the transmit and receive lines.
