I would argue the 'just because they can' on 2 counts:

1. Other countries often do the same, but their media either doesn't know or doesn't publish it (I know from personal experience) so the U.S. in not unique in this.
2. About 70% of the time, it is because it is viewed to be in the country's best interest, but sadly that view is quite often wrong.

Your blanket statement is right some of the time, not all of the time so it shouldn't be stated or it should be qualified.
