What amazes me most is that you have all this information filed away ready for future reference. How large is that memory bank anyway? :o)

>Actually this is the fallacy of reporters' language, where they're trying to zip as much info into the sentence as possible, and so use adjectives and other constructs as a vehicle... most often forgetting why. It becomes a habit, and is done without any thinking - and you get sentences like this. The guy who wrote this had gambling in mind, is quite used to be paid by the number of words, so an extra word here and there won't hurt, as long as it's not something that would attract the editor's axe.

>This is even more obvious in the headlines. This week Tracy had a link to an article beginning with "Venecuela's Chavez says...". Sounds like many countries have one Chavez each, and it suffices to mention which country it is, then there'll be no doubt as to whom are we quoting. How's your Chavez lately?

>Another possible explanation: it has become a habit now to omit the word "president", "reporter" etc... as if the entities in question can't have anything else: "NPR's Ari Shapiro" can only be a reporter, because NPR has reporters only - no editors, no technical staff (considering how many weekends they spend as a playlist, this may be true ;)...
>
>And yet another: anybody who can't have a possesive entity attached above isn't newsworthy... or is not needing one, therefore too popular?
