It doesn't bother me that he was not punished, only that the snopes article quoted the DOD and other sources as stating he was basically lying and then claiming there was no punishment. First, I don't think he was lying; I think he was telling the truth based on his experience and his perspective (I more or less explained this in another message here). It smacks entirely of PR (just in case Obama wins and becomes Commander in Chief).
