I recall the same thing was said when Bill was running for pres and we made it through the Clinton years without imploding. I've heard some argue that a tax increase would be necessary to pay for the iraq/afganistan costs. But with the economy hemoraging like it is, thats not really attractive. Nor is the continued 'emergency' deficit spending. But at this point i'd prefer some domestic spending of our tax dollars.
