Statistics may not accurately reflect the importance of an event. To say that the incidence of terrorism involving aircraft in the US is <.0001% seems to misrepresent the importance of 9-11. ;-)
I don't know whether a 300-person riot in a mall purely is a Raleigh phenomenon or whether it's a sign of the way things are going. We have heard on UT that gang activity in schools is ubiquitous. That may not be evident where you are, but perhaps by the time it affects you too it may be too late. ;-)
