Hi Denis

Long time, no speak - how are you?

>Are you using another framework? Tools?

No. Yes :)

Buying into the whole end-to-end framework thing in .NET just isn't as relevent to me, as it was in VFP. Using StrataFrame really means buying into it from "end to end", IMHO. If that works for you, then fine. This is why it appeals to many VFP devs - it's a secure and familiar feeling. Nothing wrong with that either.

I tend to use DeKlarit for data handling. This allows me to design what are effectively my Domain Objects, it generates customized, yet standard ADO artefacts, and generates/updates schema for my back-end database. Right now, that database happens to be MySQL but, using exactly the same DeKlarit business components, I can target SQL Server, DB2, Oracle etc., and totally regenerate the ADO artefacts, business framework and rules with no additional work.

Depending on the requirement, I can use the DeKlarit generated stuff from Windows forms, ASP.Net, WPF or, whatever client technology I choose. Using DeKlarit, I can generate "real" entity based business objects, or WCF services. So, this is a really flexible and powerful tool.

I tend to use standard Infragistics NetAdvantage UI tools to talk to my business objects although, Winforms applications for new projects tend to be waning in favour of browser based or WPF style applications, at least in my experience.

>Or did you just decided that it was not worth it to use third party tools?

Not at all, there are loads of really good tools in the .NET space, and a lot of free ones too.

So, I tend to use a "mix and match" approach that gives me a lot of flexibility. If DeKlarit doesn't work in one scenario, I will use SubSonic as my DAL. If Infragstics doesn't give me what I need, I can use something else. With end to end frameworks, you tend to get locked in to the framework's way of doing things and if that doesn't work well or at all in some particular circumstance, or the framework stack is too much for the requirement, then you can find yourself stuck.

Cheers

>>Hi Mike

>>>Who is behind StrataFrame? From their web site it seems like they have some sort of VFP connection. I also noticed the testimonial on the home page from Gary Wynne, whose name we remember here, saying what an aid StrataFrame was when they rewrote their mission critical app ;-(
>>
>>Yes, why did you use the :-( when mentioning my name? Just curious. FYI, I look here most days but rarely post.
>>
>>As for the StrataFrame testimonial, that was reasonably early on in the lifetime of the development in question and my comments were based on my experiences at that time - 'nuff said. I had some issues with StrataFrame that I couldn't resolve and haven't used StrataFrame since 2006. However, I am still developing in .NET :)
