I have an app written with VFP9 and SQL Server 2005. Today I got to watch a demo of a 'clone' of it written with this:
http://www.visualwebgui.com/ Talk about cool! All the lookups and such don't do the stupid webpage-fresh or anything like that - it worked just like a desktop application would. Everyting worked quite fast, the querrys worked fast - screen updated fast, etc. Plus it looked really neat. And, since it's a website - no client-side installs either.
Certainly no complaints abuot the VFP app - it was quick to get out and serves it's purpose - but
from where I'm sitting - if I was about to buy one or the other - sure as heck would be the web one over the VFP one. With things like ajax, silverlight and tools like this one, how could a VFP app compete anymore? I love VFP and all - but heck is there a purpose for it anymore? All these other things now seem to have all the advantages that VFP did in them now, plus you get the pretty .net interfaces with them too. I quit using DBC's a while back in favor of SQL & MSDE, but stayed with the VFP front ends. Now I can't find any advantages to the front-end either! (Other than I've aced working with it of course).
