>>>No, that's Gary DeWitt. Gary Wynne is in England.

>>Sorry. Of course. I remember Gary doing excellent presentations on using MSDE instead of DBFs to keep a single code base that would scale. First glimmerings of writing all my stuff against a SQL backend - didn't pick up on it right away but definitely had me going in the right direction 5 or 6 years ago.

And a prophet before his time. SQL Express is a whole lot friendlier than MSDE, of course, and SQL just keeps getting better, but Gary's approach really stuck in my mind (and was reinforced later by Duffy) and when I finally acted on it I found a whole world of added benefits in my VFP apps (which were fortunately supported by great stuff Mike and Toni did in VFE) and now those same clients find they can point VFE or .NET at the same data and are very very pleased.

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
