>>Actually I can testify that jogging / running can be very enjoyable -- when you're in shape. It's that no-fun 2 to 4 weeks of getting back into shape that keeps deterring me.

>Back in the day, when I used to train hard, I would lift weights 3 days a week and run 3.5 miles 3 times a week. I NEVER liked running, but I did it to stay fit. Now that I'm off the streets, I don't feel the need to punish myself. I'm thinking I'm going to have to break a bike out though. Then again, you know ROUND is a shape, so I could easily say "I'm in perfect shape."

10 miles a week is enough to stay fit but I doubt anyone gets a runner's high doing it. 30, 40, 50 miles a week, now you're talking. I don't see how anyone could do that if it didn't have its moments of enjoyment. It's been a while now but I still remember that feeling of exhilaration when you're cruising along fast, feet barely touching the ground. I was never an elite runner -- unlike our old pal Whil Hentzen -- but ran four marathons and finished in the middle of the pack, high time of 4:04 and low time of 3:47.

Whil, now he was nuts. He considered 100 miles a week about right, or possibly slacking. He called himself a "high mileage bigot" and practiced what he preached. Then his body started breaking down and he couldn't figure out why <g>. He also coached a couple of female distance runners (may still be doing it) who were even better than he was.
