It really was amazing. We were in a visitor area where the vibration was so much that some people actually got sick. My glasses were visibly vibrating on my nose. The noise was intense - Holding your ears didn't do much because the vibrations in your hands would hurt more. I heard later that that area was closed for subsequent Saturn 5 shots.
Shuttle shots are great too - not as violent but you can feel the vibrations for probably 20 minutes after launch. I was in college in Daytona Beach in those days - we had visitor passes to STS1 through STS24. The last Challenger flight was the one we didn't go to, although we watched it from my back porch in Daytona.
