I ran some tests at home and you're right, in either IN (select ..) syntax or IF EXISTS (select ...) syntax I got an Open table dialog. The only way I found to achieve this without an open table dialog was using derived tables. Since you're using VFP8 this is not an option for you.

I guess the only solution would be to do this in two steps then.
