LOL. He could have said he was i, lower case, and that probably would have done it, too.

I think I recall you being one of those who tried to explain to me that i is in fact a valid mathematical concept. It didn't all make sense to me -- the square root of minus 1 remains a tricky concept -- but it did convince me you know a heck of a lot more about math than I do.

One of the revelations of college was that, despite my self-image fueled by straight A's in math and great board scores, I had no clue about higher math. It stupefied me. College math quickly left me hanging by my fingertips and taking too much of my study time. The simple pleasures of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry became distant memories. I felt like a character in a Bergman movie, lost in a silent deserted landscape.

On the plus side, my freshman prof was married to Saul Bellow and gorgeous. She was a genuine mathematician from Romania stuck in a bombshell's body. Maybe my daydreams about her were my undoing. Or maybe not.
