Well my $0.10 on this one is a) easy readability is a non-specific part of the ACID(Atomic, Consistent Isolated and Durable) test for transactions and b) that there are error states where I end all tranactions to assist closedown, so I like to be able to easily see what transactions are up.

Granted, the word 'Short' is not part of the ACID test. But hung transactions are such unpleasant errors that I figure the fewer things to go wrong in between the better.

You are right I avoid excess code between the commands BEGIN TRANS, ROLLBACK and END TRANS. All these do is restore the database. My concept of editing buffers is separate to my concept of later updating the database. Easy maintenance is more important.
