If you just do select * from curObjects into cursor newCursorName nofilter and examine this new cursor, would you have data in the memo field? If not, then I suspect that the original cursor already lost memo field data some time in the process.

It could be you somehow hit internal VFP keyword, but that's a bit strange and doubtfully real.
