It's not preached in that manner...

Yes it is... if the situation arises of mother versus child and the child's life is lost, it is not an "abortion."

Example: http://www.catholicplanet.com/articles/article78.htm

Seems absolute until you scroll down almost to the bottom:

Catholic teaching clearly allows for certain medical procedures, which indirectly and involuntarily result in the death of the prenatal, to save the life of the mother, but only when all options to save the life of the prenatal have been exhausted. Such a procedure is not an abortion and is not an exception wherein abortion is allowed.

I don't really want to change direction onto a discussion of Catholic Liturgy ;-) but again this illustrates the tendency towards demonization that surrounds such issues. IMHO we all need to question all aspects of the issues, even those that seem to support our own case.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
