For explanation why,

the CHRTRAN func replaces the 1st character in the second expression with the first character in the third expression, AND the second character in the second expression with the second character in the third expression, and so on.

Look at the second character in the third expression (space)

it will be replaced with the second character in the second expression.

Oops! No character there! So it will delete.
