I guess too many folks at Microsoft had to use the default path and stumbled acrossmany applications and tools that couldn't properly deal with blanks in the path. <s> It's hard to believe how many CD &lcDir there are in the world.

They should know -

cd %userprofile%

still works.

Speaking of which... I think I now remember why does Microsoft insist on having everything in various binary formats. It's not for protection of intellectual property - they have too many lawyers per megabyte of code anyway - it's so that not everyone can read them. When W95 came up, I used to look inside many files - and guess what, lots of readable portions, lots of various logs or install scripts. And I found that the word of warning, BUGBUG, was quite frequent. I figure that this spelling was some sort of house rule, so to stand out and not be confused with regular mention of the word in normal text.

Scanning my HR (if you read XP as Cyrillic, you get hr) directory for that word, and it's still there, though not as much as 13 years ago - just 10 times, and few of them are in backups. Binary formats are a miracle :).
