Tracy, with my cynic hat firmly on my head: ;-)

1) If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

2) Sometimes you can find useful molecules in healing trees, kernels, or whiskers from the legs of a rare Tibetan bat. However, to make these substances pharmaceutically useful and safe still involves a massive corporate effort. It is not realistic to expect wholesale cures because people eat bark that purportedly comes from a tree in the Zambezi.

3) Despite assertions to the contrary, if a drug can be found to make a difference, physicians will use it whether it makes profits for pharmaceutical companies or not. Cheap aspirin to reduce risk of heart attack is one recent example, as is use of manuka honey for certain types of ulcer.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
