You have a point and I agree somewhat; however, I think it is not so much that they are more set in their ways and unwilling to change (there is that too, but that is more evident I think in their tendency to vote for a specific party even when that party no longer shares their political views because it has evolved over time and they have not), but rather I think also that they are not racist (someone who doesn't like someone because of their race) but rather prejudiced (judging someone before knowing who they are based on past experiences or information).

I see a lot of racism among young teenage blacks around the age of 16-18. I see even more among among latinos. I have probably known more latino racists (against indians) than any other. I see less among senior citizens. I do see a lot of prejudiced senior citizens though and they typically express it in ignorant statements and hushed comments. Most of that is from not being immersed in a really culture rich environment during their lifetime and having knowledge of other races only from the media.

That has been my experience, and like you, it is only my experience and maybe not a true reflection of this country at large.

Just wanted to add: I spoke with my mother last week and her retirement community has their own little get togethers and political chats. As a community, right now they are 50/50 for Obama/McCain. I was surprised. Her community is entirely white other than a few latinos and indians. No blacks at all that I know of and she doesn't know any. She has black friends, but none live in her community. Retirement communities are like little social centers. She is in Grand Junction, CO.

Something else that is strange. Here at my daughter's school, the senior class is 40/40 black/white. The class is 40% smaller than it was last year and there is a small number of asians, indians, latinos, etc but really half black/half white. Almost the entire class is supporting Obama with just a few young males supporting McCain. Those few young males who support McCain are VERY vocal though.

>Could be. I know they went heavily for Hillary in the primaries. You can't make blanket statements, of course, but I think in general seniors are more set in their ways and less receptive to change. Also (my opinion only) I think they are more likely to hold racist views than younger people.

>>Why would you say that? I would think senior citizens would go for Obama. It's his plans that will increase taxes but provide more services for senior citizens...

>>>McCain and Hutchison would definitely have a good shot at the senior vote ;-) Of course, they are going to go for McCain over Obama anyway.

She already has trouble with the Republican leadership in Congress for going with her conscience and her constituents instead of toeing the party line.

>>>>>>>>>To me, this is a gutless choice and is becoming indicative of the Obama campaign as of late. Either Hillary, with all the baggage, or Sebelius would have united the Hillary backers and removed the existing disparity with female voters that he requires to capture the election. Instead he went with the only vetted choice who's spent more time in the Senate than McCain, who's openly criticized Obama for the same points that the McCain campaign has been making and in multiple bids for the presidency himself has not been able to garner substantial following outside the already locked up state of Delaware. To me this is the safe and uninspired choice and Biden's entire job will be as attack dog.
>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>Dick Morris has suggested that this creates an obvious opening for McCain to choose a female running mate like Kay Bailey Hutchison. His argument is since McCain is already doing better than most expected with female voters he could seal at least the current percentages with a female choice and likely attract even more.
>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>I've stated before that choosing Lieberman would end the race by undercutting Obama's message of change. While I'm not completely convinced, I'm starting to think that Hutchison may even be better as she could bring in a significant number of female votes and she doesn't further aggravate the conservative base. Since neither one is an exciting speaker they'll both bore us to tears when debating Biden. That VP debate will be more effective than Ambian.
>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>Regardless whom McCain chooses, he should announce his choice on Thursday to disrupt the newscycle of Obama's acceptance speech or first thing Friday morning to disrupt the morning newscycle going into the weekend and GOP convention. If he announces either Lieberman or Hutchison the disruption will be a resounding success but if he goes weak as well with Romney or Pawlenty then Obama will likely retain the headlines through the weekend.
