Now you've jogged my memory. I read accounts of nazi occupiers somewhere in that area I think who actually got quite a bit of support from the locals due to their fair treatment of the local populace. Not to mention they had food. It was all destroyed when the Russians drove through and proceeded to do the usual raping and pillaging, etc. I can't remember where it was now!

I do remember surmising that in most cases (throughout history), the treatment of the local populace by invaders depended almost entirely on the character or plans of the senior leader present...
