When I was younger... much younger, I also held a belief that the top ranks of The Party are full of smart and honest people, and that it's the local jajara (egg thief, the lowest kind) who are a disgrace to the cause. I held it... briefly.

Now I assume John would be older than me. Seemed so, last I saw him, and I assume he would still be. Because, in my grandmother's memorable words, "I know her - she used to be four years younger than me as early as before the war".
