As for the "last thing needed"... the exact phrase (usually pronounced by a card player who sees the last card as the wrongest possible for any combination he saw in the cards in hand) went "now this is really as needed as a kid to a young girl". You can say it's proverbial upon proverbial... but then, it was her mother's decision to step into the spotlight, family and all, knowing fully well which machinery is waiting outside.
