High needs baby vs high needs job... tough.
And a belated response to the "I would not assume the decision was made for political reasons" from the top paragraph. I assume the decision was made out of a conviction, or a firmly held belief. And that's what made her attractive as a candidate... the personal decision influenced the political decision later. Which shows what sort of role model woman the GOP see as attractive to their (and other) prospective voters.
