The point here is that the US certainly is not alone when it comes to forreign aid, and from the statistics there are countries that giving a lot more relatively. Therefore a conclusion the the US is the leader when it comes to forreign aid is misplaced and does not respect the efforts of all those countries who are doing more than the US does.
It begins to go on one's nerves after a while. Just like the Holocaust mentions - about a hundred times a year on NPR alone - with barely one in twenty mentioning there were others there. You can grow up feeling deep sympathies and be on their side all you want, but after a number of years you start feeling ignored, and begin to grumble.
