>>As for the "last thing needed"... the exact phrase (usually pronounced by a card player who sees the last card as the wrongest possible for any combination he saw in the cards in hand) went "now this is really as needed as a kid to a young girl". You can say it's proverbial upon proverbial... but then, it was her mother's decision to step into the spotlight, family and all, knowing fully well which machinery is waiting outside.

>What's odd to me is that McCain knew about this before offering her the slot. Not only did Sarah Palin volunteer it when they met last week (the first time they had met), his vetters had already learned about it. Didn't he anticipate that it was not going to play well? That main selling point of McCain being the wise, experienced one is looking a little iffy.

I think it speaks to both of their judgment. How could Palin accept the nomination knowing that it would put her daughter in the spotlight? How could McCain ask her, given this and all the other distractions (not to mention her lack of qualifications)?

FWIW, I'm hearing that as recently as Sunday a week ago, McCain still had his heart set on Lieberman and his advisors insisted he couldn't do that. I could spin a couple of theories based on that, but I won't (at least not right now)
