This sentence: "One source claimed the McCain camp ‘vetted her through Google and clipping services."

If that's true, then they got what they wanted, and more. They looked for who'd look good, who'd be a poster child for evangelical/pickopal/baptismal/bornagain/whatever family values, who'd be the best to steal the show... and at that committed the worst error they could. They fell for their own propaganda (I'm not betting more than one beer on this, but... may still be interesting), because they picked the story from the media they trust, and those media know very well where their bread is buttered... so no wonder that so much is emerging so fast. It's all out there, it's just that it takes a huge mechanical Turk to comb it out. And that's where the power of money stops - you can never have enough people to make sure you got the complete story, you can never be sure you plugged every hole, because you're just one campaign HQ with just one party machinery to help you, while the rest of the people have their collective time and only the whole web. The truth is out there... and as Charles Stross put it, "you can fool some pixels all the time, all the pixels some of the time...".
