>It look to me that a hurricane have a bigger impact in the US than in any other country. Haiti have already been hit by Gustav and Hanna and it look like Ike will also make a visit there next week. There's over 160 deads already with the first 2 hurricanes and they haven't finish looking for all the victims.
>
>Where are the journalist and the TV coverage on Haiti? Gustav was heavily coveraged with journalists all over the place and the same coverage is being put in place for Ike. In the meantime, the victims in Haiti dies in perfect anonymity. Does a US life is worth more than a Haitian life?
>
>My comment goes for both US and Canadian TV stations BTW.

Hmm, I've seen the accounts of Gustav in Haiti. Assistance is still being coordinated and visits to determine what help is needed:

WASHINGTON, Sept. 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In response to the effects of Hurricane Gustav, the U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is providing an initial $100,000 for the purchase and distribution of emergency relief supplies for displaced populations in Haiti and for the support of early recovery activities. In addition, USAID is providing $100,000 to Jamaicas Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management to support aerial reconnaissance and the purchase and distribution of emergency relief supplies.

A three-person USAID assessment team has arrived in Haiti and the team is working closely with USAID/Haiti to coordinate the U.S. Government's humanitarian response with the Government of Haiti (GOH), UN agencies, and other humanitarian organizations. Overflights, assessments, and relief agency meetings are taking place to determine what the next steps are for recovery. Following the storms arrival in Jamaica, two USAID disaster experts deployed to support USAID/Jamaica to conduct surveys of affected areas to determine whether additional assistance is needed.

The IOM Mission in Haiti is working with Haitian authorities, UN agencies and local partners to provide emergency relief items to persons affected by Hurricane Gustav.

As part of the United Nations country team in Haiti, IOM will take the lead in providing shelter and non-food items in the capital Port au Prince and in Petit and Grand Goave, two of the hardest hit areas located some 70 kilometres west of the capital.

IOM Haiti has immediate access to 1,439 hygienic kits and 1,445 cotton sheets and is on standby to distribute these items as soon as possible.

Emergency shelter to persons made homeless by the hurricane is being provided in temporary collective centres set up in existing buildings. Some 70 per cent of these shelters are schools, 29 per cent are churches and the rest are located in community centres.

On September 2 (Tue), the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency relief goods (plastic sheets, water purifiers, portable jerry cans, tents, blankets, electric generators, sleeping mats, water tanks) equivalent to about 17 million yen to the Republic of Haiti, which has been suffering from Hurricane Gustav.

Hurricane Gustav passed the southern part of Haiti in the afternoon of August 26 local time (Japan time: morning of August 27). According to an interim report dated August 30 by the Ministry of Interior of the Government of Haiti, the Hurricane left 76 persons dead, 9 missing, 35 injured, 7,232 persons in shelter and 10,276 households affected.

At present, people in Haiti are forced to live under difficult conditions due to the collapse of houses, suspension of water and power failure and other problems. The Government of Haiti, while making utmost efforts for early recovery in the affected areas, has requested emergency assistance to the international community including Japan.

At the request of the Government of Haiti, the Government of Japan has decided to provide emergency assistance to Haiti in light of offering humanitarian relief toward the hurricane victims, as well as based upon the friendly relations between Japan and the Republic of Haiti.

There's more. It's been on the news here as well as news coverage of the damage...
