First, if you want vs2008 sp1, and you haven't got .net framework 3.5 sp1, install it

vs2008 install has (a version of) sql server - you may want to uncheck the installation of sqlserver 2005

After vs2008 has been installed, try vs2008 SP1. Then go for sqlserver 2008 or 2005

Note: Do a complete pc backup on a disk/usb drive prior to installing anything - in case you want to revert or anything goes wrong
