Last time I saw it slow down a machine was in '95 on a 33MHz 486. Today's machines are about 100 times faster, and the compression software is now in use for some 19 years (counting since first usable PKZip, but even that wasn't the first).

The 2G limit, however, may apply regardless of the actual size on disk, because the problem isn't really in the size of the file on disk, but in the 32 bit addressing of the records.
