I even go to the debugger, find the coontainer object and change its width right there. It just reverts back to the original width.

Hey, that sounds familiar :) I gave up, too. There's really not a good reason for a user to resize a checkbox column, anyway. At least that's my rationalization :) You can always shut off the resizing, anyway, though I haven't done it.
