Hi Russell,

>Ok, so we're just out of luck, it seems. This is a Windows CE machine, the newer emulators won't work on CE and Guineu will not with the older emulator, correct?

Not so quick... First you need to make sure that Guineu runs on the device. That means, you need to copy the relevant files over to the device and execute guineu.compact.exe. If you get a file open dialog, all is well. Otherwise you probably need to install the .net compact framework 2.0. Here's an article that outlines these steps for the 9090G device: http://randombinary.com/post/Setting-up-MSMQ-on-Windows-CE-50.aspx

Once Guineu is working on your CE machine, you can use the emulator and the Windows Mobile 5 image to do your development. WM5 uses the CE5 kernel and is therefore somewhat similar. There might be difference in the UI between the CE5 and WM5 version. For instance, the menu might be on the top in one version, and on the bottom in the other one. Forms might have different sizes, etc. Hence, from time to time you need to copy on the actual device, but for testing your code the WM5 emulator should be good enough. There also might be differences in the feature set that is available. Most likely this is something I need to fix, so please send me any error message that Guineu reports.

If you really want to get into the whole platform builder stuff, you can create your own CE5 emulator image. You would need to download and install the platform builder for Windows CE5 (the one for CE6 are available at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/embedded/products/windowsce/getting-started.mspx) and then use another tool to create your own emulator image: http://blogs.msdn.com/barrybo/archive/2006/03/15/552045.aspx.

>What's the deal with CE? They are phasing it out?

Well, CE6 is the current version, not CE5. In addition, CE is meant for companies like Motorola to built their own version of the operating system. There is no standard version of CE5 unlike WM5 which is more or a less a fixed set where platform builders only leave out certain applications that are too expensive for them. That makes it harder to provide some sort CE5 image.
