Don't give them ideas, smokers are just as humiliated as can be, short of actual violence.
BTW, where did you find violence? I didn't find it anywhere in the article that anyone was hurt. Damage, yes, found that mentioned in several places.
There may be a legal parallel to this. There was a case once where an inter-city bus driver was speeding up a lot and driving well above the speed limit of 60 km/h (~35 mph) through villages. One of the passengers took out a gun, pointed it to the driver's head and told him to slow down. The guy stopped the bus at the next police station, and the pistolero turned out to have regular permit, and has claimed self defense. "He was trying to kill us all with his driving". The driver confessed he was "in a bit of a hurry and was a bit nervous".
