I think Maggie may have energized (stimulated?) the Tory base with the "Stern Nanny" factor {s}. ( "Hand me the cane and bend over, lad, and I shall stimulate your base!")

A bit surprised they've never asked Eddie Izard to stand - the ladies clothes and all (God I miss John Profumo)
