If you have that much stuff running all at once, are you running low on RAM? Fire up Task Manager, go to the Performance tab and look at "Commit Charge [Total]" and "Physical Memory [Total]". If the former is close to, or larger than the latter you may have a low memory condition.
BTW XP SP1 is
way out of date - you're missing out on tons of bug fixes and security updates. SP3 has been out for some time now and is quite solid IME. Of course, it requires that your copy passes WGA validation - this doesn't happen automatically through Windows Update or Microsoft Update, you have to manually run one or the other and download and install WGA.
