And that was precisely the mindset that prevented taking Bin Laden from Sudan. It showed a fundamental lack of understanding - especially after the first WTC attack. Of course, given that Clinton skipped meeting with CIA for intelligence briefings on a regular basis (see Woolsey) and his genuine disinterest in anything about about foreign policy that did not effect his poll standings ( see Morris ) it is not surprising that such a smart man could develop such a disastrous blind-spot.

>>Naw, that was Bill's decison not to get him.

>>>The probable Obama choice for NSA is Dr. Susan Rice. Brilliant, accomplished - but as Clinton's USS for Africa she botched the Sudan's offer of Osama bin Laden (or at least was point person - the decision not to take him may have happened up the chain.) She is impressive in a very Conde way, but I am not sure where she stands on a lot of pretty key national security issues.

>>>>>>Depends on your definition of "right". Elected officials have always put friends and associates in their cabinets because they know and trust them. It's the way the world works. Again, I don't see where this is so unique to Palin that it qualifies as news.

Now you can certainly make an argument that now and then, an official knows an individual well enough to know that person can do a good job, even though the person has no relevant experience, but you'd expect one or two such appointments. Five high school classmates in high level jobs seems like a little too much patronage, and not enough concern with making sure the job gets done right.

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
