I've done something close - you guessed it, word index tables - against a huge table with about quarter gigabyte of memo, and I started getting results within three seconds where it took north of thirty (or would never finish) by SQL involving memo fields. I also assigned brownie points for the quality of the hit - the position-in-memo/size-of-memo ratio, length of the word, number of occurrences in the text and a few other simple criteria. It was just whooosh fast.
