Leaving aside the questions of buffering which the others have discussed, one important reason for using INSERT rather than APPEND BLANK is that with INSERT you never have a record with a blank Primary ID (assuming, of course that you include this information in your INSERT command).

However, we have also found that by including our surrogate key function (which produces the primary ID in each table) in the Default Value of the field that APPEND BLANK works perfectly.
