Maybe public speaking, writing books, etc. are now part of the MVP evaluation process. Let's not forget, though, why the program was created: to shift tech support from paid Microsoft employees to user support. At the time of the program's inception Microsoft had hundreds, if not thousands, of employees working in customer support. Not many now, are there? It was a cost saving move, and a very successful one. This is why originally the only criteria AFAIK was online user support.

Sure, the program may have evolved and changed over the years, as most things do. I'm just saying let's not forget why there is an MVP program in the first place.
