Well, I guess it works because shorting the power plug actually means unplugging the computer? I´ll bet that just unplugging it for a few seconds will also solve the problem, the rest is just to entertain or distract you from the real problem.

That reminds me of a common trick I always use (also read about it somewhere): for example, when you are on the phone with a client, instead of telling him to verify that the lan cable is really plugged in. (he will say it is, without even checking, and also think that your are treating him like an idiot), you tell him to unplug the cable, blow on the connector to remove the dust, and plug it back in. You also explain to him that sometimes a faulty connection can be due to the accumulated dust.

By doing this, you give the client a chance to verify that the cable is properly plugged in, if he finds it lying on the floor or plugged half way in, he will not tell you, he will just blow on it and plug it in. This way, he saves face, and you solve his problem.

Ummm, it sounds they just played that trick on you. :)
