Canada once had laws that said that Federal prisoners (2 years and over) could not vote in federal elections and provincial prisoners (less than 2 years) couldn't vote in Provincial elections. Both laws were overturned as unconstitutional. To the best of my knowledge, there never was a law in Canada that said, once convicted, a person could never again vote even after discharge. They have to live and work among the rest of us, raise families, etc, so I think removing their right to vote forever is cruel and unusual punishment.
