Maybe things have changed without my knowing, at least according to those two references. And I am willing to change outdated habits. Still, I'm not sure I agree that two spaces after a period is just an outmoded idea owing to monospaced typewriters. I still think extra spacing between sentences is a good idea, to set them apart. And wouldn't a proportionally spaced font tend to actually close up the space, since a period is so narrow?

OK, I am convinced; here's how. I just pulled a random selection of books off the bookshelf and they all appear to have single spaces between sentences. At least to the naked eye the gap appears no wider than that between words in the middle of a sentence. I guess if this already happened and I didn't even notice, it must be all right.

Now all I have to do is stop myself from unconsciously putting in two spaces. That is one I am not going to lose a wink of sleep over, but I do concede the point. Amazing what you can learn around here!
