The Visual Extend framework, which I have used, does more or less the following: Get the titles and expressions from each column of the form's grid; have a few ComboBoxes to choose those, and additional selectors for comparison, and criteria (e.g. "=", and some value to compare the field or expression to).

This framework also the option to list the field names; but I like the Grid approach better: irrelevant fields may be hidden; additional expressions (from related tables) may be shown. Of course, you might do the same with some sort of array property (or two properties that contain the fields or expressions, and the corresponding descriptions, delimited with semicolons or something similar).

This is invoked from a separate form; the filter is then applied to the data editing form with an appropriate method, if I remember correctly.
