My parents made us give our opinion on a subject. Round the table it went. The worst thing possible was to not have an opinion or something to discuss. You could forget enjoying dinner then... Afterall, there were all those starving kids in China who would be happy to think about an issue and come up with something to say about it to earn their dinner. You didn't have to have a firm opinion, but if you didn't have enough information to form an opinion you had to say so and then you had to say what you did know about it. It was as important as finishing everything on your plate. I remember once saying that I thought the work I'd done that day was more than enough to earn dinner (it was summer field work). I didn't get to enjoy dinner that day. I got bread and butter and I got the pleasure of doing the dishes for 7. My mom had made summer goulash (probably why I remember it to this day) and it was one of my favorites.

And you got "bread and butter"! LUXURY! We got stale bread and spit, and that were only if mother hadn't a dry mouth, and t' bread were out o't' bin!
