I logged into the Gmail account though the website and in addition to putting in my username and password I had to enter the 6 goofy looking characters.

For my own install of the app I use the companys email server and I have told them it is not spam.
But this is a vertical app that is sold to 100s (or 1000s) of users and I have usually been directing then to gmail if they do not have their own email server. Smaller companies usually do not have their own email server so they usually use the GMail approach. The app only sends a crapload of emails if theire is a problem. Emails are generated per laundry equipment so if there is a laundromat with 200 laundry equipment machines and there is a problem quite a few emails can be sent in a short amount of time.
Semper ubi sub ubi.
