I have seen this before. On a VISTA laptop at home, word (and other office apps) will not startup in my son's login.profile Yet the same installation works flawlessly in mine and other login profiles on the same computer (we have multiple logins). So I have created a separate new login for him on the same laptop, to use the office apps, since he does not want his original profile deleted. It all works fine now except his profile and office.

This appears to be something to do with Vista and virtual directories that have somehow got screwed. The easiest way is to remove that user login that does not work and create a new one and that should solve that. Otherwise you have many many hours negotiating the world of Virtual directories and drives in Vista and may still come up with nada.

Go figure.
