Are you sure about it usually being much longer? I haven't seen many instances of people giving more than two weeks' notice. That's in the U.S. -- I know it's different in Europe.

People who work in low-income service jobs sometimes walk away without giving notice. There is no guarantee of work (the employer can fire you at will) so there is no legal requirement to give notice either. Now, each state has different laws and some businesses have unions to protect the employee and the employer which has guidelines to follow so I'm not counting those. Government jobs are different. The employee can walk away but the employer must follow certain rules. It would have to be checked in each state here, but typically, an employee can just walk away with not repercussions other than not having a recommendation from that job.
