I've seen some software (VFP sometimes too) check for drives, and if I had a CD or a thumbdrive in before but not now, and my app runs on a drive with a higher letter... it may take some 30 seconds to complain about the missing drive. Or it may not complain but still wait for the absent drive to time out. When it complains, at least I know. It keeps happening for a while and then this temporary entry gets flushed out of some MRU list somewhere and everything is fine again.

Which is reason enough for me to not keep a disk in the drive, nor the thumbdrive plugged in when not in use.
