Not really in terms of the application design. They are good for tests in the command window, though. In the application it always better to stick with SQL commands rather than using relations.

However, there are situations when they probably still be used.

There was a thread by Beth where she had to use relations (there were no other way (or not simple way) in VFP8 to achieve her requirements).
